Trial Survival Guide
What to take? The following lists will help you get organized for your show day. These are only suggestions. After your first few trials, you'll be a pro and have your own "personalized" list of needs.
FOR YOUR DOG
- Collars and leads - You will require a different type of collar and leash depending on the events that you enter. For example, obedience requires a six foot lead and choke chain. In agility, a choke is not allowed. A variety of leash and collar types are used in the conformation ring.
- Crate or cage for your terrier to rest.
- Cage pad or blanket (bring an extra, in case of accidents)
- Blanket (to cover crate if it's windy or sunny)
- Water from home, especially in the case of puppies.
- Bowls
- Dog food, in case you are away longer than you expect
- Bait - attention getting treats for conformation (please don't drop any in the ring, this is very annoying to other owners as their dogs keep stopping in the ring to smell and look for food).
- Toys - some owners prefer these to treats in the ring, others use them to get dogs excited for racing (usually not needed!)
- Chewsticks/bones
- Exercise pens for puppies
- Muzzle for racing
FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY
- Hats! I wish I had a dollar for every time I heard someone say "I wish I'd worn my hat". Everybody, especially children, should bring sun hats. Many shows do not have shade available.
- Sweaters, or t-shirts, coats depending on weather possibilities.
- Shoes and boots, a change of socks (especially at wet times of the year)
- Chairs - We always bring at least 2 lawn chairs for relaxing
- Blanket for sitting on the grass
- Money
- Camera
- Rain gear
- Sun screen
- Bug repellant
- Food & beverages, cooler (food is usually available on site)
- Papers a) a copy of the prize list with your classes marked if pre-entered, or your completed entry form for post entries b) if you are going across the Canada/US Border, a rabies certificate and sometimes a health certificate is required. c) don't forget copies of Go To Ground and Working certificates.
- Pens/markers & paper
- Number holder, if you have one (rubber bands are available if you don't)
